Tuning vs Voicing

Tuning is altering the pitch of the instrument. Pitch is measured in frequency by cycles per second or “beats” known as Hertz. Historically A was set to 435 Hz. This is defined as the the harmonic frequency of nature. Now A440 Hz has been widely accepted as the new standard.

Voicing is when one manipulates the tone of the instrument to sound however they please. We refer to tone as the timbre or the intonation of an instrument. Besides rhythm, this is the most compelling element of sound. We describe tone as mellow, bright, bold, warm, rich, sweet, metallic, or harsh. Many people have tried to exchanged pianos entirely unaware of the fact that the tone of the entire instrument may be changed and regulated to their customizations by a highly skilled technician. This is my specialty & passion.
